Incubating Ideas

Where do you get ideas, Jennifer?

Ideas come from all around me.

Books, poetry, music and lyrics, dreams, phrases… it seems endless. Sometimes, though, they feel just out of reach.

“Artist’s Block” is a dreaded term. Creative people know that they are creative, yet we will be the first to feel imposter syndrome set in and freeze up when it’s time to make something new.

It’s not that creativity is gone; it’s incubating, I tell myself.

Everything is cyclical. My work is produced in cycles and series, throughout the seasons of my life. It’s okay to be in an incubation period (like the one I’m in now). It’s during these periods that I can reflect and envision older works anew.

Soon, the brooding is done, and an idea is ready to emerge.
