Underwater, Overjoyed

I make it no secret that my mental health is something I battle with on a daily basis. I want others to know that they are not alone in their battles, and to lessen the taboo around these discussions. There is no shame in needing help to maintain an even keel when it comes to one’s mental state; there is no shame in sometimes falling short. Help is out there.

As I said, it’s a daily struggle for me. Some days, the struggle is not too bad – like wading in ankle-deep water. Other days, you’re fully submerged, gasping for air, reaching for a life jacket.

It was in 2016 that I began photographing models underwater. These early underwater images of mine were so symbolic of my mental efforts. The weight of the water like the weight in my chest; feelings of overwhelm and desperation.

In creating this first set of underwater portraits, I found a great amount of joy in the expression of these emotions. It was a release.

The work resonated with my audience as well. My underwater work continues to be some of my best-selling and award-winning, and I continue to make underwater portraiture each year when the season is right.

As long as the work continues to help those struggling with those feelings of overwhelm and helplessness, I will continue to create it.

Models: Mackenzie Graham; Alex Clement Cranfield; Grace Graugnard.
